The construction of a modern market at Mitec in Solwezi worth K1, 200,000 has begun.
Solwezi Municipal Council Public Relations Officer Thandiwe Tembo said once completed, the market would have a market shelter, inbuilt concrete stands and an ablution block. Ms. Tembo said the contractor Hemming’s Investment Limited who have been funded by the ministry of local government and housing had already moved on site and were expected to complete works in September, six months after the commencement.
She said the modern market would house various in built concrete block stands for proper display of merchandise, toilets and showers to be utilised by the traders and the public. “The facilities within the modern market will help alleviate the challenge of water and toilets currently being face by traders at the market” she said.
She noted that the modern market would help move traders from the road into a designated trading area. Moving traders into the market would also decongest the roads which were currently flooded with street vendors, a situation she described as unsafe for the traders, their customers and motorists.
Ms Tembo said the new modern market would also add beauty and value to the lives and outlook of the town adding that the status of Solwezi will be uplifted.
“Mitec is the first part of the town that is seen and there is need to ensure it reflects the beauty of the rest of the town and gives new comers an idea of the other modern infrastructure and potential investment in solwezi” she said.
She urged members of the public to be patient and comply with the contractor in ensuring the market was completed within the stipulated time.
“Most of us prefer to buy from the vendors in the streets rather than going into the market which has continued to encourage streets vending,” she said.
Ms. Tembo said an operation carried out with the Consumer Competition Protection Commission (CCPC) in which counterfeit bags of mealie meal were seized from street vendors was an indication that there iwa no guarantee of safety and quality.
