Giants clash in ‘Zoom’ cup final today at Nkoloma Stadium
IT IS a clash of giants today when Green Buffaloes take on the glamorous Kitwe miners Power Dynamos in a cup final at Lusaka’s Nkoloma Stadium that is expected to produce the best of Zambian soccer.
The 2015 Barclays Cup champions Buffaloes are determined to add another title to their name when they face Power in the 2016 Samuel ‘‘Zoom’’ Ndhlovu cup final this afternoon.
On paper Green Buffaloes were not favorites to storm the cup final but surprisingly beat Zanaco 1-0 in the semi-finals on February 20 at the same venue to qualify for today’s encounter.
This afternoon, the Zambia Army-sponsored side faces an uphill battle as Power Dynamos has promised to win the title at all costs.
Green Buffaloes coach Bilton Musonda said his lads will not take chances to ensure victory was recorded in today’s encounter.
“We are not going to underrate Power Dynamos; they are a strong side and always give us a tough game. This will be a must win game and the boys are aware of the difficult task ahead. I have confidence in the boys and targeting to score more goals,” he said.
Musonda will look up to captain Christopher Katongo , Sebastian Mwansa and Friday Samu to engineer Green Buffaloes victory.
Meanwhile, the Tenant Chilumba tutored boys will go into the game without teen striker Conlyde Luchanga who has been re-called by his former club Lusaka Dynamos in a see-saw transfer wrangle.
Luchanga was instrumental in leading Power Dynamos into the finals in a semi-final that ended 4-2 on post-match penalties against Super League champions Zesco United.
He shattered Zesco’s dream of defending the title when he scored the equalizer for Power Dynamos.
Chilumba said the team will still grab the title despite not having the services of Luchanga .
“I feel the boys are physically and mentally ready for the match. Yes, Luchanga won’t be part of the team but we still have a powerful team capable of getting the results. After the disappointing 2015 Super League season, the boys need to work hard to win the title,” he said.
Striker Patson Daka and Benson Sakala who are with the national team preparing for the 2017 Gabon African Cup of Nations qualifier against Congo Brazzaville were expected to join Power Dynamos in Lusaka.
The Power Dynamos squad has goalkeepers: Joshua Titima and Allan Chibwe
Defenders: Lawrence Chungu , Govender Simwala , Billy Mutale , Benson Sakala, Stephen Kunda and Francis Kasonde.
Midfielders: Emmanuel Chimpinde, Laurent Muma, Victor Kashitu, Larry Bwalya, Kelvin Mubanga, William Njobvu, Julius Situmbeko and Gozon Mutale.
Strikers: Martin Phiri, Luka Lungu and Patson Daka.
