THE United Party for National Development (UPND) has declared that it will soon be deciding whether the Patriotic Front (PF) can hold its political campaign meetings on Copperbelt because the people in the region have revolted against the ruling party.
But Chishimba Kambwili has described the claims by the UPND as the biggest political joke only meant to fantasize political popularity because the opposition political party was non-existent on the Copperbelt.
Meanwhile, Chief Mukuni’s wife was among the many UPND sympathisers at the UPND secretariat to welcome Mr Mwamba after his release from detention.
UPND president Hakainde Hichilema claimed that the people on the Copperbelt were fearless and considered opposition members in Lusaka as ‘‘coward hyenas’’ who could not cut the popularity of the PF.
Mr Hichilema said Mr Mwamba who is the UPND vice-president for administration was released not because the State recognized his rights but because the PF and President Edgar Lungu had been given a 48 hours ultimatum in which to free Mr Mwamba or face a revolt.
Addressing UPND supporters at the party secretariat soon after Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba was released from Lusaka Central Police on bail, Mr Hichilema said the opposition political party was going to deliver a
political blow to the PF that would knock the ruling party in the first count of the vote.
“Copperbelt Province has changed and you people in Lusaka do not wake up and work hard, you will be beaten in votes by your friends on the Copperbelt. The people on the Copperbelt have resolved that by May this year, it will be the UPND that will be deciding whether the PF should have their meetings or not.
So our business is to look forward and we must make sure we deliver a stinging political blow to the PF so that it can be knocked out in the first count of the vote. In fact the UPND does not need 50+1 percent vote, it is too small, we want to hit more than 60 percent because this country is going towards the revolution of 1991,” Mr Hichilema said.
And Mr Mwamba said his arrest and detention were meant to withdraw him from circulation so that the UPND should have difficulties to mobilise and campaign for August general elections.
Mr Mwamba said he would continue talking about the ills of the PF and that no amount of intimidation was going to dampen his resolve to help defeat the ruling party in the August general elections.
Mr Mwamba said he would only rest for a few days after his three nights in detention and would resume his countrywide tours and mobilization activities for the UPND.
Mr Mwamba has vowed that should the UPND form Government after the August general elections, those currently in Government and persecuting him should be ready to go through his experiences.
Mr Mwamba said Chief Munkonge who is his Uncle had been sent by the Chitimukulu to visit him and that it was not true that the Bemba Royal Establishment (BRE) had denied having visited him at Central Police in Lunsaka.
“Let me confirm that Chief Munkonge who is my father was sent by the Paramount Chief Chitimukulu who is my grandfather to come and visit me while I was incarcerated.
But let me tell you that after the August general elections, the mandate to govern will be given to the UPND and all those persecuting me will be prosecuted,” Mr Mwamba said.
But Mr Kambwili who is Information and Broadcasting Services Minister said Mr Hichilema was imagining and dreaming about the popularity of the UPND on the Copperbelt and has challenged the opposition leader to call for a rally to prove his popularity.
“Come August 11th, wina azalila. I have just filed in my application to re-contest the Roan Constituency seat and you should have seen the multitude of people that turned up. The problem with the UPND is that they bus and address the same people in their rallies,” Mr Kambwili said.
