AIRTEL Zambia yesterday donated US$30,000 (K330, 000) towards the hosting of the Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) 2016 Zambia Golf Open Championship set for May 30 to June 5.
Nchanga Golf club has a budget of $1 million to stage the Zambia Open Championship set for Chingola. At the cheque presentation ceremony held at Nchanga Golf club, Airtel managing director Peter Correia said that they were delighted to come on board as a silver sponsor for Zambia’s biggest annual sporting event.
“We are happy to be part of this prestigious tournament. I would like to present a cheque of US$30,000 towards the successful hosting of the tournament. Airtel believes in supporting various sporting disciplines such as soccer and Golf.” Correia said.
Meanwhile, KCM chief executive officer Steven Din said commended Airteln for coming on board in ensuring that the event was successfully held. were delighted to have Airtel on board in their quest to host a successful championship.
“We are delighted to have Airtel on board to meet the US$1 million targeted budget. Since the launch of the tournament last year, the Zambia Golf Open Organizing Committee (ZOOC) under the leadership of Mathew Nkhuwa has been raising funds effortlessly trying to essentially reach their target of close to a US$1 million,
“Now, the economic environment that we find ourselves in today, we are finding it difficult to attain anyway near those kinds of targets that we set ourselves. That is why it is even more important to acknowledge the contribution from Airtel as a Silver sponsor to the overall event,” Din said.
KCM have pumped in US$150,000 ( towards prize money. Nkhuwa said Airtel’s sponsorship package was a big shot in the arm as Nchanga prepares to host the Zambia Open for a third time in ten years after staging the event in 2006 and 2011.
