10 UTH child heart patients to undergo surgery

THE Mission Bambini Foundation, an Italian NGO, has embarked on a one-week ‘‘childrens heart’’ project to help children with serious heart defects at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka.

The project, which started on February 27 and is expected to end on March 5, has scheduled a pediatric cardiac surgery mission.

The surgical interventions will be carried out by 10 Italian volunteer doctors, in partnership with local staff.

During the project, 10 children affected by serious heart defects will be operated on and local medical staff would be trained during the surgery and post-surgery phase to improve their skills.

The mission had in the last three years provided new equipment for pediatric cardiac surgery, hence contributing to updating the UTH surgical facilities. Mission Bambini Foundation, is part of the Children’s Heart Project and was launched nine years ago. Since 2006, 1,587 children have been successfully operated on; 12,782 have been diagnosed and more than 100 local doctors have received free training in various countries in Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe.
