THE Legal Committee may have misguided itself on the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) constitution when they disqualified Nkana Football Club treasurer Alex Munasha from contesting the FAZ treasurer’s position at the March 19 elective annual general meeting (AGM) in Kitwe.
Munasha was expected to challenge incumbent Rix Mweemba for the treasurer’s post but was disqualified, claiming he did not meet the four-year administrative role at club level.
But according to article 26.7 (ii)of the FAZ constitution, candidates for the office of treasurer shall be Zambians with at least four years’ experience in football administration in full executive capacity at member club and/or member association level with an accountancy qualification.
Munasha’s record indicates that he has served four years in an administrative role at Nkana and is a chartered member of ACCA and holds a Bachelor of Accountancy and a fellow of the Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants.
But Nkweto Tembwe has said that the credentials submitted by Munasha did not match the research done by the Legal Committee.
“The Legal Committee did a thorough research and it was discovered that the submissions made do not correspond. Many phone calls and inquiries were made to ensure that the constitution was followed,” he said.
Tembwe charged that FAZ will not fight battles in the press but challenged those aggrieved to appeal as quickly as possible.
“We will not throw away professionalism just to appease some individuals. Those aggrieved should not run to the press to complain but appeal within seven days. I must strongly state that no journalist will overturn what the Legal Committee has ruled. So let them appeal and the Legal Committee will decide,” he said.
Meanwhile, Munasha was yesterday afternoon expected to lodge his appeal against his disqualification from the FAZ treasurer’s race.
He said he was submitting the same credentials although with a strong back-up document from his club Nkana.
“I still believe I am qualified to contest the treasurer position. I am submitting the appeal today (yesterday) and patiently wait for the Legal Committee’s decision,” he said.
The FAZ elections are set for Kitwe’s Moba hotel on March 19.
