The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) should consider extending the voter registration exercise at district centres, Patriotic Front (PF) deputy spokesperson Frank Bwalya has said
The ECZ has cancelled the 14 days mobile voter registration which was supposed to run from 14th to February 29, 2016 due to lack of funds.
Mr. Bwalya said the ruling party felt that the Commission should extend the exercise.
But Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Public Relations Manager Cris Akufuna has said the voter registration exercise was unlikely to be extended because the Commission had already made an election timetable to be ready for the August 11 general elections,
He said Zambians should not expect any extension of the voter registration, as the Commission had already made its decision to end the exercise today.
“The call to extend the registration of voters is impossible and citizens should not expect anything like that, the decision is final. We had given them enough time to register; so we cannot extend, we already did an election time table and that’s it,” Mr Akufuna said.
On Saturday during the N’cwala ceremony, Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni speaking people also appealed to President Edgar Lungu to ensure the voter registration was extended, to enable more people to register as voters and participate in the elections.
In response President Lungu said he had to consult the ECZ if there was any possibility of extending the exercise.
