MMD members in Western Province are in support of the MMD-PF alliance which they believe can form a government of national unity because both parties understand democratic tenets.
MMD national executive member Kamwengo Kamuti said since President Edgar Lungu hinted that he was willing to work with MMD, all the structures in the province were now strategising on the next step.
Mr Kamuti said Western Province was an MMD stronghold and not the opposition UPND as claimed.
“Those who are saying they are popular in Western Province are lying because MMD has all its structures intact and its members only scattered to other parties at a time when they were challenges because they had nowhere to go and some political parties took advantage.
“And from the time when President Lungu showed that keen interest to work with our party, all our members who had gone astray are now back in the party and this has given us hope, especially that our party president Dr Nevers Mumba was on the ground in all the areas,” he said.
Mr Kamuti said MMD-PF members were working together to ensure victory in the August 11 elections.
“When we heard about the visit of his Excellency to the area, both parties were geared to receive him and we will make sure that this working relationship continued until we emerge victorious and that will not give chance to any other parties that are claiming that Western Province is their stronghold,” he said.
Mr Kamuti said the fact that the opposition MMD still had its structures intact in all parts of the country could work to the advantage of the ruling PF.
He claimed that some political parties were now courting MMD members in the area because they were under pressure, but said it was impossible because both MMD and PF had worked to the expectation of the people.
“We want continuity because of the development we have seen in the MMD and now we can also see what the PF is doing. Western Province votes on merit and it is not about the majority of people at any political gathering but through the ballot,” he said.
