PARLIAMENT was last night almost turned into a boxing ring when UPND Katombola MP Derrick Livune stepped in front of the chamber and took off his jacket as he attempted to fight Information Minister Chishimba Kambwili in front of the Speaker.
Mr Kambwili also stood up in an attempt to meet Mr Livune, who was also approaching him (Kambwili).
Mr Kambwili had dared Mr Livune to come in front if he thought he thought he could beat him (Kambwili) up.
The near punch-up followed a remark by Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda who said the PF was the only party in the country with the exclusivity of leadership.
UPND members stood up in protest, demanding that Mr Chikwanda retract his statement, but Mr Chikwanda refused to retract, stating that he did not offend anyone as he did not mention any person’s name. It was at this point when Mr Livune was seen advancing to Mr Kambwili for a fight but Mr Kambwili was restrained by Home Affairs Minister Davis Mwila and other Patriotic Front senior members from the front bench.
About 25 National Assembly security personnel entered the chamber to quell the confusion which had gripped the House as they stopped Mr Livune from adancing towards Mr Kambwili. As Parliament personnel were resolving the fight between Mr Kambwili and Mr Livune, Mufumbwe Member of Parliament Steven Masumba was spotted roughing-up UPND Solwezi lawmaker Teddy Kansonso as they also nearly exchanged punches.
The security personnel split into two groups as one went to Mr Masumba and Mr Kansonso. Another punch-up nearly took place when Munali MP, Prof. Nkandu Luo was heard shouting:”Nalelo twala fi wina” when oral voting was about to commence.
Prof. Nkandu Luo was boasting about the over 115 MPs against UPND’s 27MPs.
