PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has warned opposition political party leaders that they should not take his continued call for peace in the country as a sign of weakness and lack of authority.
And President Lungu yesterday commissioned a new Indo Zambia Bank Lundazi Branch with a call on the banks and other financial institutions to consider extending their banking services to rural communities where many Zambians did not have the privilege of accessing financial services.
President Lungu said he was a peaceful leader who believed in the unity of the country but warned that he should not be pushed too far because as Head of State, he was capable of effectively dealing with delinquent opposition political leaders.
Addressing a rally in Lundazi yesterday, President Lungu said the opposition political parties should refrain their cadres from engaging in political violence.
The President also warned PF cadres to desist from engaging in violent activities. He said he was a peaceful leader who was always preaching peace and it was his expectation that other political leaders would emulate him.
“When I say ‘no violence’ that does not mean I am weak. I am a peaceful leader but that does not mean I am a coward. Do not push me too far because I have the force behind me and I can use them. ‘‘We are not going to achieve our developmental agenda without peace. We are here because of the peace that we enjoy and I am appealing to opposition leaders to refrain their cadres from engaging in violence. I am also appealing to my members in the PF to equally refrain from violence,” President Lungu said.
The President called upon the Church to continue praying for the political leadership in the country including those who did not believe in God so that their hearts could be softened to appreciate the grace of God.
And President Lungu said many rural women did not have access to financial services in the country and that he was particularly happy that Indo Bank Zambia Limited had opened a branch in Lundazi which is largely an agriculture area.
He said it would take the sacrifice of Zambians to mitigate the consequences of the global economic crisis that many countries including Zambia were experiencing.
The President said financial institutions such as Indo Bank Zambia were key to the economic development of the country and that he was happy that the bank had registered a lot of success.
