FARMING, agro-processing and the food industry should be the new focus for Zambia to generate wealth for farmers and employment opportunities for many people, says Zambia Livestock Limited director Michael Kabesha.
Mr Kabesha said Zambia’s agriculture sector has much to offer the country, especially if it could improve productivity in the livestock sector.
He said with the establishment of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, the sector should grow. Mr Kabesha said there was massive potential and opportunities for exports if the livestock sector was harnessed well.
“Agriculture programmes must be well implemented for it to be effective and contribute to the much needed economic growth of the country.
‘‘There are enormous opportunities to create employment in agriculture and agro-processing,” he said.
He said Zambia had plenty of natural resources for livestock production and that investment should be focusing to the growth of the economy.
“In that way, we can grow the livestock sector to generate foreign exchange income through exports to other markets,” he said.
He further urged farmers to focus on tapping into neighbouring markets due to their proximity as well as opportunities resulting from increasing incomes and population across the region.
He said livestock diversification would empower the small scale farmers in all parts of the country and that would result into a remarkable expansion of the industry.
Mr Kabesha said Zambia Livestock Enterprises as a founder of livestock marketing system in the country wanted to grow livestock industry.
Mr Kabesha said the livestock business could grow the economy and work to the advantage of Government’s decision of diversification.
