The MMD can still come out of its current embarrassing situation of suspensions and expulsions to become the people’s movement again, says political activist Mubanga Chileshe.
He said the MMD was a people’s movement that managed to convince people that they were a formidable political party that ruled the country for 20 years because people believed in what they stood for.
Mr Chileshe said the MMD being the founding party of democracy in Zambia should urgently find lasting solutions to the in-house squabbles that have divided the former ruling party with law suits against the leadership.
He urged the MMD president Nevers Mumba not to personalise the party by refusing the people’s aspirations of a popular leader at the summit.
“Dr Mumba should not personalise the MMD as his personal to holder party, but rather allow the people’s wishes to prevail over the leadership. All the suspensions and expulsions must be lifted. The MMD is a people’s movement and the people are yearning to see it become the unity party it once was during its 20 years tenure in office, and earn back the people’s trust,” Mr Chileshe said.
He was commenting on the squabbles that have rocked the MMD.
Mr Chileshe said as a formidable movement, there would be no need for the former ruling party to enter into political alliance with other parties because they already embraced a tested crop of leaders who have managed Government before, and so should not compromise their status by allowing battles to take over the good name of the party.
