PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has declared that he is going to adopt a woman as his running mate in the August general elections dashing the hopes of the men who have been positioning themselves for the position.
And President Lungu has mocked some opposition political parties whose leaders have rejected to practice intra-party democracy by refusing to hold national conventions so that their members could elect other leaders to lead the parties.
President Lungu said those aspiring to be his running mate in the coming general elections should ensure they were female because his desire was to promote gender equality in governing the county.
The Head of State said for as long as he would remain President of Zambia, he was going to nominate a woman to be his running mate because the amended Constitution had provided for a female running mate in a presidential election.
President Lungu said this at the Patriotic Front (PF) women’s fundraising breakfast at Inter-Continental Hotel yesterday.
“So those who would want to be my running mate should be women. If I remain President, then my running mate is going to be a woman and that is in the Constitution. This is an expose’and I want to push gender equality beyond the running mate. As the PF we want to promote women and we have reserved 40 percent of the seats in Parliament and councils to women,”President Lungu said.
And President Lungu mocked some opposition political party leaders who have been contesting the presidency countless times and had been losing while refusing to be subjected to intra-party democracy by going for conventions.
President Lungu said the August general elections were certainly coming and that he was again going to thrush his opponents who had been in the presidential race countless times.
President Lungu said some political parties had been told by their members to consider going for a convention but had refused so that they could continue contesting the presidency even when their party constitutions were clear that if one lost elections twice.
