FELIX Mutati is lying that I held meetings with the UPND leadership in South Africa and agreed that the party should rally behind the UPND in the 2015 presidential by-election, MMD president Nevers Mumba said yesterday.
And former MMD Kawambwa MP Elizabeth Chitika has challenged Mr Mutati to state whether he has joined UPND or not following his disparaging remarks against the former ruling party.
Ms Chitika said that it was unfair for Mr Mutati to be attacking MMD without stating which side he was on.
“I am challenging Mr Mutati to state categorically whether he is still MMD or has joined UPND,” she said
Dr Mumba said if it were so, he would have been in the forefront campaigning for UPND at the time.
Dr. Mumba has charged that Mr. Mutati risked being irrelevant in this year’s elections if he continued with his antagonistic approach to push for a convention because it would never be held as decided by the MMD national executive committee (NEC), which was the highest decision-making body of the party. Speaking during a press briefing at Wamulungwe Lodge in Kasama yesterday, Dr. Mumba said nothing will move him from focusing on the 2016 elections like what happened in 2015, adding that it was unfortunate that the same group of people that plunged the party into chaos last year had again regrouped to cause confusion.
“Nothing will move us from the focused position of what we are doing right now like it happened in 2015 and no one is going to succeed be it Mr. Mutati or anything else ‘I will not give my precious time dealing with cheap and unprincipled politics. I have a political party to run which I can consider to have gone through too much at the hands of the same people that wish to engage in fruitless debates.
“Last year, we were derailed by basically the same people and we are not going to subject this party to that type of behaviour again. Suffice to say that if we had agreed with UPND, I would have been in the forefront as president of MMD in working with UPND.
‘‘The fact that I was not there is a confirmation that he (Mutati) is lying and I am not going to be part of the cheap politics of lies,” Dr. Mumba said. He said he would not waste time responding to statements from people who were brewing confusion in the party as his main preoccupation was preparing for the forthcoming tripartite elections.
