A  26-year-old remandee facing charges of  buglary and theft yesterday attempted to escape from the accused’ s dock in the Lusaka Magistrates Court.

Webby Chisala, a taxi driver of Lusaka’s John Laing compound, attempted to escape when he crawled out of the dock to his short-lived freedom while court and prison officials were busy sorting out some matters.

Chisala appeared before Magistrate Austin Mubita  for  continuation of trial for burglary and theft.

He was later apprehended by a prison warder of Lusaka’s Kamwala remand prison shortly after the prosecutors and the warder noticed that the remandee was not in the accused’ s dock.

The warder went to check in the dock and found that Chisala not there.

The warder opened the exit door for the magistrates court which is connected to the police holding cells and found Chisala hiding  in the passage tunnels.

He was apprehended and brought back to court before Magistrate Mubita.

Chisala was earlier this year jailed for three years with hard labour for a similar offence when he appeared before Magistrate Alice Walusiku.

He is expected to come for plea today.
