A 27 year old businesswoman of Zingalume Compound Selina Zulu who is accused of murdering her two- year old baby after a domestic dispute yesterday appeared in the Lusaka Magistrates for an explanation of her charge.
Zulu appeared before Magistrate Nchimunya Simabubi who read out the charge which she said she understood.
But the court could not take plea as a charge she is facing cannot not be tried by a lower court.
Zulu will continue appearing in the subordinate court to await instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions to commit the matter to the High Court for trial.
Particulars of the offence, are that on November 21, 2015 Zulu picked up a quarrel with her husband Derrick Mwansa who works at Zambia Air Force Headquarters.
It is alleged that immediately Mwansa entered the house his wife asked her him if had her K30 which he borrowed earlier on to buy tomatoes. She wanted the money to buy charcoal.
Mwansa then asked his wife why she was asking for the money before she could greet him.
Zulu got upset and the two started to exchange insults and later Mwansa aimed a slap at his wife who managed to duck.
She went to fetch an iron bar to hit Mwansa but she missed and instead it hit the baby in the head.
Mwansa said after he removed the iron bar which lodged into the baby’s the head they rushed the bleeding child to George clinic who referred the case to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) where the baby was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor.
The child was then taken to the Brought In Dead (B.I.D) room.
Zulu was later arrested and under warn and caution statements admitted murdering her baby but said her action was not intentional.
The matter comes up on February 28 for mention.
