A LUSAKA lawyer, Joseph Banda, yesterday appeared in a Lusaka Magistrates Court where he denied 10 counts of obtaining over K80, 000 by false pretenses.
Banda who appeared before Magistrate Alice Walusiku denied in counts one and two that between July 1 and 31, last year obtained K 9, 305. 00 each from Barthomew Daka and Apton Zulu by falsely promising to secure them employment as Zambia Police officers.
In counts three and four it is alleged that Banda on the same dates obtained K 8,560, 00 from Peter Mulenga and K 5,450. 00 from Lackson Sakala by falsely promising to secure them jobs in the Zambia Police Service.
In counts five and six Banda is alleged to have on the same dates with intent to deceive and defraud obtained K 8, 750, 00 and K 10, 105, 00 from Jane Katota and Alfred Phiri Sakala respectively on same allegations.
In counts seven and eight Banda alleged to have obtained K K8,895, 00 and K 8, 015 from Kelvin Silavwe and Musenge Silungwe respectively for the same purpose. In counts nine and ten Banda is alleged to have obtained K 6, 445, 00 and K 8,540, 00 from Steward Bandala and Moses Tembo by to secure them jobs as police officers.
In denying the charge, Banda ,27 ,of house No. 3305 New Kasama Road in Chalala told Ms Walusiku that he understood the charge but denied ever obtaining money from anyone.
He said the allegations were a mere speculation meant to damage his reputation as a lawyer.
He was granted bail in the sum of K 50,000 with two working sureties’.
The matter comes up on February 23 for trial.
