There is no special recognition for MMD founder fathers to call for a party convention to elect a party presidential candidate before the August 11 general elections, says Malama Sokoni who is an MMD founder member.
He said in a statement that the party constitution did not include a clause in its constitution recognizing founder fathers.
“In the MMD Constitution, there is no recognized grouping called ‘Founding Fathers’ with privileges and rights to call for anything, let alone a convention. If there was such a group I would be a key member as I was present at the famous Garden House meeting in 1990 where the MMD was first born as a movement and was later converted and registered as a political party in February 1991,’’ Mr Sokoni said.
He described the group a paid, self-styled misguided and powerless team.
The veteran politician urged MMD members not to be misled by a hired group going round campaigning for an illegal convention. He said the legally recognized convention was the one held in 2012 at which Dr Nevers Mumba was elected party president.
He said that the first term of the current party president expires in 2017.
The view of the party is that this group missed a golden opportunity to be relevant to the MMD by ignoring all appeals from the President to assist in the mobilization exercise and they now have no moral right to call for anything because they have found closed doors where they rushed to and campaigned for Presidential candidates from other parties in the 2015 Presidential by-election,” he stated.
Some people calling themselves MMD founder fathers have placed an advertisement in the media calling for an MMD convention.
The former ruling party has been rocked with factions in the recent past representing different interests.
