Patriotic Front (PF) and United Party for National Development (UPND) will have an advantage in the August 11 general elections because of their financial muscle, National Revolution Party (NRP) president Cosmo Mumba has said.
He said it would not be easy for small political parties like the NRP to take part in this year’s elections.
“It will be easy for giant parties such as the PF and UPND to successfully take part in the elections because they have the money while small parties have to struggle to contest,” Dr Mumba said.
He commended the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) for making it easier for political parties to ferry their hundred supporters to the commission’s provincial offices and not to the Lusaka High Court.
Dr Mumba said it was a welcomed move because it would have been hard for small parties to move their supporters from the constituencies to Lusaka.
“The decision by the ECZ to record the hundred supporters from their provincial centres it a welcomed move but will only benefit the larger parties because either way it is still expensive for us, you have to think of transport to move the supporters, regalia, feeding and other logistics, it will not be easy, ‘’ he said.
Dr Mumba also said he was happy that the ECZ reacted to his petition on time and addressed most of the issues that he brought out.
He said it was productive to know ECZ’s plans in relation to the general election as it would enable all political parties to plan.
“I am happy that the ECZ responded to my petition soon and also happy that they have responded to most of my concerns. It shows how efficient they are and also enables us as political parties to plan well,” Dr Mumba said.
He said his supporters should be assured that he would be on the ballot paper come what may and that the country would for the first time in history record the first ever youth president.
Dr Mumba said he had raised 50 percent of the money he needed for this year’s election campaigns and called on all well-wishers to help him with funding.
“I want to assure my supporters that I will soon be filing in my nominations and I will be on the ballot paper, all I need is their support. I have managed to raise half of the money that I need for this year’s elections and I would like to call on all well-wishers to come through and help my party with funding, and I can assure you that Zambia will this year for the first time record the youngest president,” he said.
