AN unlicenced driver of Chingola has been jailed 30 years for dangerous driving, the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) has disclosed this in a statement.

RTSA public relations information officer Fredrick Mubanga said the agency has welcomed the verdict on Masuzyo Zimba as it would act as a deterrent to would-be road traffic offenders.

He said the conviction and sentencing of Zimba would send a strong self-control signal to all motorists not to flout road traffic regulations with impunity.

Last week, the Kitwe High Court convicted Zimba, 30, and sentenced him to 30 years imprisonment for running over three pedestrians and killing them on the spot.

“As RTSA we do not rejoice in seeing people going to jail for abrogating road traffic regulations, but we feel our roads need safer road users who respect and understand road traffic regulations,” Mr Mubanga said.

He said if motorists failed to comply with rules and regulations relating to traffic laws, then they deserved to go to prison to reform.

Mr Mubanga called upon members of the public not to trivialize road safety matters as such issues concerned the lives of human beings.

He said the agency would continue to enforce the Road Traffic Act no. 11 of 2002, to ensure that the numbers of road traffic accidents in Zambia reduced by 50 per cent by the year 2020 in accordance with the aspirations of the United Nations Decade of Action on Road Safety.
