MICHAEL Kaingu has said he is still a loyal member of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) and that party president Nevers Mumba should not get worked up about his (Kaingu) future plans to recontest his Mwandi Constituency seat on the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) ticket.

Dr Kaingu said although he had announced his plans to re-contest his seat on the PF ticket in the August general elections, he had not renounced his membership with the MMD.

Dr Kaingu said he would remain loyal to the MMD and Dr Mumba whom he said was still his party president and that his statement about his intention to use the PF as a vehicle to go back to Parliament  was an expression of the future plans.

Dr Kaingu who has announced that he would consider re-contesting his seat under the PF ticket in the coming general elections said he had a good relationship with Dr Mumba and was going to maintain the respect he has had for the MMD leader.

He told the Daily Nation that he had met with Dr Mumba and that the MMD president had asked about his opinion over his future political intentions and that he (Kaingu) had not hiden his intention.

He explained that Dr Mumba would remain his party president despite being a Cabinet minister in the PF Government, adding that it was not an offence for him to express his opinion on his future political career.

“Dr Nevers Mumba should know that I am still an MMD member and he is therefore still my party president. The statement I made about my intention to re-contest my seat on the PF ticket is about the future and should not hurt Dr Mumba. He will remain my party president and I will respect him as such.

I have met him and we have had discussions and I have told him my opinion. I remain MMD but I have expressed the intention to stand on the PF in the coming general elections,” Dr Kaingu said.

He explained that Dr Mumba as MMD president has expressed his personal opinion on the need for political parties to form alliances in the coming elections and that no MMD member should be offended by such a statement of intent.
