KAMBWILI MUST BE ARRESTED – UPND

THE United Party for National Development (UPND) has finally reported Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Chishimba Kambwili for his alleged tribal remarks against the people of Southern Province.

The UPND has demanded that Mr Kambwili should be arrested and prosecuted for allegedly uttering tribal remarks which the opposition political party believes had the potential to threaten the peace and security of the country.

UPND media director Ruth Dante confirmed to the Daily Nation yesterday that the opposition party was certain Mr Kambwili had breached the Penal Code Cap 87 Section 70 (1) of the laws of Zambia by preaching hate and tribal speech against the UPND and the people of Southern Province.

Ms Dante said Mr Kambwili had equally abused the authority of office by using Zambia National Broadcasting Cooperation (ZNBC) to propagate hate messages against a selected region and should therefore be arrested and prosecuted.

She said Mr Kambwili used the public broadcaster to advise Zambians against voting for the UPND because according to him (Kambwili), the opposition political party was too tribal to be given the privilege to take over the governance of the country.

She said the UPND was aware that Mr Kambwili had decided to take a country-wide tour to continue preaching hate speech and tribalism against the UPND because that was the only weapon the Patriotic Front (PF) had to use to defeat the opposition political party.

Ms Dante said in reference to the people of Southern Province, Mr Kambwili claimed that the people in the region were so tribal that even if Jesus Christ came on earth and stood on a different political party, the people in the region would reject the Son of God and vote for their tribesman.

“I have since reported Mr Kambwili to the police for his hate speech and tribal remarks against the UPND and the people of Southern Province. Mr Kambwili’s tribal remarks and his continued hate speech against the people of Southern Province have the potential to threaten the peace and security of the nation. He must therefore be arrested and prosecuted because he has breached the Penal Code Cap 87 Section 70 (1) of the laws of Zambia. The law states that any person who utters any words or publishes any writing expressing or showing hatred, ridicule, or contempt for any person because of their race, or tribe is guilty of an offence and liable to prosecution, conviction and imprisonment and Mr Kambwili should realize he is not above the law and must be arrested and prosecuted,” Ms Dante said.

Ms Dante said Mr Kambwili had allegedly used the entire Sunday Interview programme to propagate hate speech against the UPND and the people of Southern Province when Zambians were expecting him to discuss the cost of living and other economic challenges the country was facing.

She stated that the talk of tribalism had become more pronounced during the PF reign, stating that no Government from the days of Dr Kenneth Kaunda had ever hyped the debate about tribalism and hate speech as was being talked about now.
