LOCAL contractors are capable of quality jobs if they are supported by Government, one of the local contractors said yesterday.
Habourside Contractors Company, which is constructing new Mwandi district administration offices in Western Province, said Zambia had qualified builders that could do quality jobs just like the Chinese companies were doing.
Engineer Oscar Mulenga said construction needed adequate resources and support from relevant authorities if they were to see tremendous works.
Mr Mulenga said there was no difference between the foreign companies and the local ones, but that the local companies were demotivated due to lack of support from the Government.
He said even the same Chinese companies were using local people who were treated as though they did not know their jobs.
“Chinese contractors are just like us. It is just the colour because whatever they can do, we are also capable of doing it.
“It is Government which does not want to support the local people. What is letting us down are resources and when we have resources, we are able to do quality jobs,” Mr Mulenga said.
He explained that foreign companies appeared to be committed to works because they got support from their governments, which was supposed to be the case even to Zambian contractors.
Mr Mulenga said his company had done a lot of constructing works in Western Province and had never failed provided all the necessary resources were available. He said currently his company was carrying on two projects in Mwandi district and was expected to complete them by May this year.
The company is constructing an administration block and 20 housing units at a cost of K15 million. A check by the Daily Nation at the new site revealed that most of the construction were at roofing level.
And Mwandi district commissioner Precious Muyenga said Government was happy with the pace at which the contractor was moving.
Ms Muyenga said the Government would try its level best to ensure resources were provided on time.
She said all the Government departments were ready to move to the new site once it was ready.
Ms Muyenga said the Government was determined to ensure all the people benefitted, adding that the purpose of creating new districts was aimed at bringing development closer to the people.
