ZAMBIA’s agriculture sector has a huge potential to feed the entire African continent with massive investment in the industry, says agriculture minister Given Lubinda.
Mr Lubinda said one way of doing that was through the promotion of out-growers schemes in which many farmers would be involved
He said therefore that investors in agriculture should aim at promoting out-grower schemes to ensure a sustainable growth of the sector.
Speaking in an interview, Mr Lubinda said his ministry was looking forward to huge investment in out-grower schemes for farmers which would be a sure way of sustainable growth in agriculture.
“Zambia has the ability to export agriculture products once there is huge investment in the sector. The ministry is looking forward to huge investment in the sector especially that which will benefit small-scale farmers,” he said.
The minister emphasised that there was urgent need for huge investment in the sector to enable the country produce more for export even to big countries such as China.
“Those interested in investing in agriculture must learn from investment China has made across the country. I am happy to say that the agriculture sector benefits many Zambian farmers including foreign farmers, ”he said.
Mr Lubinda said Zambia was a unique country in Africa because it had people willing to grow farming through hard work.
He cautioned investors to quickly start up their businesses once they were given an opportunity because Zambia received many applications on a daily basis from those wishing to put their money in Lusaka.
“Young people here are willing to be employed in agriculture to help grow the sector and this is what makes Zambia a unique country,
“By the way, once investors are given land to invest in, they must develop it quickly otherwise it would be taken by others because we receive many applications from different investors every day,” he said.
