OVER speeding drivers in Chawama should face the law because of their contribution to the many road traffic accidents in which some lives have been lost.
In condemning the reckless drivers Chawama residents in Lusaka have appealed to the concerned authorities to do something about the situation before more lives were lost.
The residents said irresponsible motorists in the township drove their vehicles without any regard to pedestrians in the area.
A concerned resident Mr Monde Habanene said many lives continue to be lost in the township due to over speeding.
Mr. Habanene said there was need for the council to construct more speed humps to avoid road carnages in the area.
“We are grateful for the new roads, people here have for a long time been crying for these roads. But now we are worried about the road accidents that are happening in the area, people are been knocked down because of over speeding by some motorists,
“So it could be better if the council could increase the number of speed humps, this will force motorists to drive with care,” he said.
But area councillor Potipher Tembo told the Daily Nation in an interview that most of the major roads in the area had enough speed humps.
Mr. Tembo clarified that most of the accidents were caused by careless driving by some motorist and not the few speed humps on the roads.
He warned motorists to be conscious on the road and consider the lives of other road users.
“We have enough speed humps; at least most of the roads have speed humps. The problem is with the motorists, who do not care about others. They need to always remember that there are other people using the road, and that any mistake can cause an accident,” he said Mr. Tembo also advised pedestrians to be mindful, urging them to adhere to the road rules.
“The pedestrians also need to watch out on the roads, they should know when to cross the road,” he said.
Mr. Tembo however stated that the council would carry out a research to see if there was need for more speed humps.
“We need to do a research if truly there is need to construct more speed humps, funds are there in case we need more speed humps,” he said.
