…he should tell Zambians which elections were rigged
ASSERTIONS by veteran politician Vernon Mwaanga that previous elections were rigged have the potential of causing chaos, tension and serious instability in the country.
Now stakeholders have called on Mr Mwaanga to state which elections were manipulated at tallying level.
Speaking to the Post on Friday, Mr Mwaanga said “the totalling process has in the past been subjected to manipulation and abuse.”
But the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Director Priscilla Isaacs said the commission has never rigged elections because it conducts them within the confines of the law.
And former Committee of Citizens Executive Director Gregory Chifire said Mr Mwaanga’s statement had the potential to plunge the country into an abyss of chaos and political turmoil.
Mr. Chifire said it was wrong for Mr. Mwaanga to cast a shadow of doubt over the credibility of elections in Zambia by sending a bad signal to the electorates and politicians that election results could be manipulated.
“Mr. Mwaanga has come out in the open to declare to Zambians that he was a chief rigger of elections and we challenge him now to tell the nation how he rigged the elections in the past since he seems to have expert experience in the rigging process,” Chifire said.
And PF Deputy Secretary General Mumbi Phiri said the Patriotic Front was disappointed that under immense desperation, The Post, had continued its pathetic attempt to give Zambians an impression that the PF would rig this year’s elections.
“We are doubly disappointed that as usual, the discredited debt-ridden tabloid has continued to use its loud-mouthed vuvuzelas, including Vernon Johnsom Mwaanga, a well-known attention seeker who will say anything in order to grab a headline in this ill-conceived pilgrim,” Ms Phiri said.
Ms Mumbi set the record straight and distanced the PF from what she termed as ridiculously cheap propaganda being peddled by the trigger-happy tabloid.
“Firstly, rigging is not a word that is associated to the PF, infact the first time the PF discussed rigging was when President Michael Chilufya Sata, MHSRIP was robbed of an election 2006 and he named The Post as being part of a scheme that fixed the result of that year’s poll,” Ms Mumbi said.
It was The Post, she said, that went ahead to announce the results of the poll widely believed to have been won by the late President Sata.
PF secretary general Davies Chama has observed that Mr Mwaanga has confirmed Zambians’ suspicion that he was MMD’s election rigging specialist by alleging that there are irregularities during the vote totalling process.
