THE revamping of the cashew nut industry and fish farming projects in Western Province by Governmnet will go a long way in improving peoples’ lives especially among rural communities, Mwandi Patriotic Front chairman Kaongolo Inambao has observed.
Mr. Inambao told the Daily Nation yesterday that the two projects will provide jobs to the locals, thereby improving their economic status as that would increase their household disposable income.
He said while the province seemed to lag in development compared to other provinces, Governmnet was committed to roll out its projects to Western Province, adding that it was just a matter of time before the initiated projects would start bearing fruit.
Mr Inambao said the people of Western Province were indebted to Governmnet for its recognition and desire to develop the province as that in turn would reduce the levels of poverty among the people.
“The cashew nut project under the Nandusa Multipurpose Cooperative Society to which Government gave out a loan to expand the cultivation of cashew nuts will definitely help the locals as most of them will find employment. Other than that, this will have a direct impact on the Zambian economy especially we can add value to the crop before exporting to other countries as that would boost foreign exchange.
“There is also the Mwandi Integrated Fish Farm project which has just been funded by Governmnet which will provide an alternative source of fish for the people especially during the fish ban period. This will also compel the local community to consider going into fish farming which is in line with Government’s policy of diversifying the economy and for this we thank Governmnet,” Mr. Inambao said.
In December last year, Government gave the Inyambo Community Development Trust a loan of K3.3 million to boost fish production under the Mwandi integrated fish farm project while the Nandusa Multipurpose Cooperative Society received K5.5 million to boost the cultivation of cashew nuts.
