Zesco should immediately revert to old electricity tariffs instead of allowing people to continue complaining that the power utility company was still charging them according to the hiked tariffs, Minister of Energy and Water Development Dora Siliya said yesterday.
She said there was need for Energy RB and Zesco to ensure that to work out modalities to ensure the graduation of power tariffs that were cost effective.
Ms. Siliya said there was no justification for Zesco to continue charging the household customers with the hiked tariffs after President Edgar Lungu’s direction not to effect the new tariffs due after a public outcry that they could not manage to pay exorbitant tariffs.
She said all household consumers should be charged according to the old tariffs and that the Presidential directive should be followed.
President Lungu last week directed Zesco to revert back to the old electricity tariffs which were hiked late last year.
The President’s Special Assistant for Press and Public Relations Amos Chanda said that the directive was to be effected on 1st January last week but could not be implemented but that it was supposed to would take 4th of January.
Mr. Chanda explained that the process of migrating to cost reflective electricity tariffs will be done in phased and systematic manner.
