AIRTEL Zambia has started monitoring multiple registrations with a single Identity following the abundance of pre-registered sim cards that are on sale on the market.
Airtel Zambia head of corporate communications and government relations Yuyo Nachali-Kambikambi said although there was no law limiting the number of times a single Identity could register numbers, the organisation would be monitoring the multiple sim cards registration.
Ms Kambikambi said Airtel had partnered with the other operators and Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) to raise awareness on the do’s and don’ts on SIM registration and that advertisement had been placed in the press from December.
“We are also now monitoring multiple registrations with a single ID though it is important to note that there is no law limiting the number of times a single ID can register numbers,” she said.
Ms Kambikambi said Airtel had additionally been training retailers and placing some housekeeping rules around SIM registration for the last few months.
She said those who would be found wanting, would be faced by the law enforcers.
Ms Kambikambi was responding to query by the Daily Nation that wanted to find out how possible it was for members of the public to be found with pre-registered simcards bearing names of citizens.
Hundreds of pre-registered simcards were on sale and Daily Nation was able to buy two of them, one from an Airtel sales agent and another from MTN.
According to the Daily Nation findings, Airtel pre-registered simcard bears the number 0974275215 while the MTN is pre-registered under 0962366674.
