A UPND cadre has been apprehended and detained at Mazurka Police Station in connection with the alleged harassment of Patriotic Front (PF) Mazabuka chairwoman Joyce Kangwa.
And Ms Kangwa has said she was still under medication and was feeling some pain in the arm which was twisted
Southern Province Police Commissioner Godwin Phiri said the UPND cadre was arrested and appeared in court where he was denied bail.
‘‘With the help of the complainant, we arrested one UPND cadre who is still in police custody at Mazabuka police, he appeared in court on 31st December and was denied bail and he is scheduled to appear in court for second appearance on 8th January,’’ he said.
Meanwhile, Ms Kangwa said she was still under medication and was feeling some pain in the arm which was twisted
She said she was disappointed with the conduct of the UPND especially former Chikankata district commissioner Sylvester Simayaba. She said all allegations made by Mr Simayaba against her were nothing but arose from bitterness after losing his job.
“Mr Simayaba is just bitter over losing his job as DC, and is now alleging many false things against the PF and it’s government,’’ she said. Ms Kangwa denied ever aggravating the situation when she lifted her party symbol to the UPND.
She said she did not raise the symbol but was coming from her shop when she met the convoy and two men pounced on her.
“I did not raise my party symbol, those are lies, I was coming from my shop going to Edmunds for my cousins wedding when I saw a convoy of UPND people and two men pounced on me and twisted my arm, stripped me naked by pulling my chitenge,” she explained.
Ms Kangwa said it was unfair for the cadres to take advantage of her and harass her without reason. She also denied claims by Mr Simayaba that after she was stripped naked, she was left with a black trousers because she was not wearing anything inside.
“I would like to urge both the UPND and PF to maintain peace and avoid violence, especially this year being an election year, what happened should not repeat itself to anyone in any political party as it is uncalled for,” Ms Kangwa added.
