THE statement by Patriotic Front (PF) Vice Secretary General Mumbi Phiri that the traditional leadership in Northern Province was not happy and felt betrayed that United Party for National Development (UPND) Vice President for administration Godfrey Mwamba has joined UPND is shameful, UPND spokesperson Edward Mumbi has said.
Mr. Mumbi said such remarks should be condemned by all well-meaning Zambians.
He said the statement by Ms. Phiri were tribal and contradicted the One Zambia One Nation concept.
“Such a statement is very tribal and shameful and it can only come from a person who is tribal and divisive of the nation,” Mr. Mumbi said.
He reiterated that there was no traditional leader in Northern Province that has made a statement against Mr. Mwamba.
Mr Mumbi said it was wrong for the PF deputy secretary general to issue incorrect statements about traditional leaders.
“As far as we are concerned, no traditional leader has made that statement of not being happy that GBM joined UPND, it’s not correct. “Ms. Phiri should not issue statements which are not true, because that statement is not correct,” he said.
Mr. Mumbi further challenged Ms. Phiri and the PF to tell the Zambian people which traditional leadership in Bemba land felt betrayed by Mr. Mwamba’s decision to join UPND. “So am challenging Mumbi Phiri and PF to tell us which traditional leaders in Northern Province are not happy that Mr. Mwamba has joined UPND, because that insinuation is tribal, is she saying that northerners are only limited to joining PF and not UPND?” he said. Recently , Mrs Phiri issued a statement that the traditional leadership in Northern Province was unhappy with Mr Mwamba’s decision to join the UPND.
She said the Chiefs felt betrayed because they did not expect Mr. Mwamba to leave the ruling party.
