13 Zambians nabbed over NRCs

THIRTEEN Zambians have been arrested for allegedly conniving with foreign to obtain or attempt to get National Registration cards (NRC), Immigration Department Public relations Officer Mubanga Chileshe has revealed.

She appealed to all Zambians to regard the NRCs as a constitutional privilege they cannot offer to foreigners at any cost.

“Following the mobile registration exercise for the Zambian green NRCs that commenced in May, 2015, a total number of 13 Zambians have so far been arrested for aiding foreign nationals for obtaining or attempting to obtain the green NRCs, thereby contravening the laws of Zambia.

“The Department of Immigration would like to warn Zambians and foreign nationals to desist from aiding the foreign nationals from attempting to obtain or obtain the national registration cards as perpetrators and would-be perpetrators would be brought to book and they will face the law. The green National Registration Cards are a preserve of Zambians,” she said.

Ms Chileshe told the Daily Nation in an interview yesterday that the department was disappointed with the behaviour of some Zambians who were conniving with foreign nationals to commit crimes without realising the security risks such clandestine activities posed to the country.

She said allowing foreigners to obtain green NRCs had ‘‘huge consequences’’, adding that the department would not spare any Zambian found perpetrating the act as it compromised the security of the country by exposing it to potential enemies.

Ms Chileshe said her department would not relent in ensuring that foreigners who entered the country had proper documentation that allowed them to live legally in the country, while warning those working with foreigners that they would face the wrath of the law if they continued undermining the operations of the Immigration Department.

“Our role is to ensure that Zambians living in the country have proper documentation that allowed them to leave the country and come back without any problems. In the same vein, we are also mandated to scrutinise foreigners coming into our country to ensure that they meet and comply with immigration requirements in this country.

“It is just unfortunate that some Zambians are now taking advantage of the mobile issuance of NRCs and are aiding foreigners to get the green NRCs with reckless disregard of the consequences of their actions to national security,” Ms. Chileshe said.
