A Lusaka man who repeatedly called his wife a prostitute and a witch when under the influence of beer lost his marriage of 18 years in a Lusaka local Court.
This is in a case in which Catherine Manganiko of Old Kanyama compound sued her husband, Batra Hakacha, 55, an office assistant at the ministry of sports for divorce.Munganiko,46, refused to give her husband a second chance and threatened to drink poison if forced to live with him.
The two got married in 1997 and they have seven children. Dowry was paid. Manganiko told Senior Court Magistrate Sarah Nyendwa sitting with Magistrates Daniel Phiri and Ackim Phiri at Kanyama Local Court that Hakacha that troubles started when he started drinking beers after three years into their marriage
She explained that every time Hakacha was drunk he insulted her and told her that she was a prostitute and a witch.
Manganiko said Hakacha changed for two months after a Pastor prayed for him. She said later Hakacha started chasing away Pastors who came to try and bring peace in their house and accused them of having an affair with her. “Hakacha stopped eating because of beer and he has lost weight. He told his relatives that if he dies I am the cause. He says that I steal his money and saves somewhere. Hakacha says my children are also prostitutes like me,” said Manganiko. Hakacha said that Manganiko comes home at 23.00 hours from the shop and that he was the one who looked after their 2-year-old child.
Hakacha then asked Manganiko to forgive him but she refused and said that even in 2003 they divorced and remarried after seven months but there was no change in his drinking habits.
When Hakacha asked if he could be given one month, Manganiko said that if she continued to stay with him she would take poison for what she was passing through when he was in a drunken stupor.
Magistrate Nyendwa said it was a fact that Hakacha drunk excessively and insulted Manganiko at will. She said that it was also clear that Manganiko did love him because of his behaviour when he was drunk. She granted the couple divorce ordering Hakacha to compensate Manganiko with K5000 through monthly instalments of K500 and to be paying children maintenance fee of K400 per month. Property acquired together to be shared equally.
