President Edgar Lungu has warned that Government will be compelled to introduce statutory price controls if millers continue exploiting consumers.
Mr Lungu also warned that Government would be forced to repossess milling plants if millers continue hiking mealie meal prices.
He said this at Luato Market in Kalulushi when he addressed scores of marketeers and residents.
President Lungu said the price of mealie meal is too high for the ordinary Zambian.
He wondered why millers had resorted to unnecessary hikes when they are buying the grain from farmers cheaply.
Mr Lungu said he will be meeting the agriculture Minister Given Lubinda and cabinet to discuss and look at trends on the market where consumers are being exploited by millers.
President Lungu has urged the people of Chambishi Township in Kalulushi to ignore detractors such as the UPND and instead continue to support the Patriotic Front (PF) Government in its efforts to achieve economic recovery and improving people’s lives.
And President Lungu has promised to give Chambishi a district status after engaging the Ministry of Local government, the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and other stakeholders.
Speaking yesterday during a brief rally at Chambishi market, Mr Lungu said Chambishi residents and Zambians in general should not listen to detractors who wanted to take advantage of the economic challenges the country was facing to gain political mileage.
He said Zambians should not listen to lies from the opposition political parties such as the UPND who were claiming to have solutions to the economic challenges the country was facing.
“Political parties like the UPND will always come to you to tell lies that if you vote for them, they will find solutions to the country’s problems.
Don’t listen to them, they are just telling you lies. UPND can’t have solutions to the country’s problems because they have failed to find solutions to win elections and form government.
“UPND has been in the opposition for a long time before PF was formed. PF was formed and within a short time, it formed government, leaving UPND in the opposition. So UPND are mere detractors who will not form government. This is why I am urging you to ignore them,” President Lungu said.
And President Lungu has promised the residents of Chambishi that he would soon declare Chambishi a district after engaging stakeholders such as the Ministry of Local Government and Housing and the ECZ.
He said it was not fair for the residents of Chambishi to be under Kalulushi district and so he would ensure that Chambishi was given district status after everything was put in place.
“The issue of Chambishi being given district status has been talked about for a long time and this is why today, I thought I should tell you that am looking at it.
I don’t tell lies, I will soon give Chambishi district status after engaging the Ministry of Local Government, ECZ and other stakeholders,” President Lungu said.
And President Lungu has said he was worried that most marketeers were trading outside instead of trading in the markets.
