CIVIC Forum on Housing and Habitat Zambia (CFHHZ) has called on Government to engage local contractors in building housing units for civil servants.
CFHHZ programme coordinator Grace Mtonga noted that the decision by government to hire foreign contractors to build housing units for civil servants was unfair and not helpful to the Zambian people.
She said it was discouraging that Government awarded contracts to foreign constractors when there were local contractors who were capable of doing a good job.
“It’s very unfortunate that our government always prefer to hire foreign contractors to carry out works such as building housing units for civil servant in the country when we have local people who can do that,” Ms. Mtonga said.
She observed that the country had skilled and qualified contractors who were capable of doing a good job.
Ms Mtonga called on Government to reconsider its decision and engage local contractors in the project.
She stated that the construction sector in the country could only boom if local contractors were empowered by government.
“We would like to call on government to revise its decision on hiring foreign contractors to carry out this work, it’s not fair for Government to award contracts to contractors from outside. The only way our construction sector can flourish is when they empower the local contractors,” she said.
