A united opposition to remove the ruling party from Government is a good idea if the results are aimed benefiting ordinary Zambians, Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) president Dr. Nevers Mumba has said.
Dr. Mumba said alliances among opposition political parties were allowed in a democratic country such as Zambia.
He said there was nothing wrong with opposition political parties coming together for the sake of implementing programmes which would benefit Zambians.
“Alliances are allowed in any democracy, it all depends on how you agree to work together,” Dr. Mumba said.
He said the MMD had always been willing to co-operate with progressive political parties.
Dr Mumba said the Zambian people were a priority and that the MMD would support any programme that would benefit them.
“The MMD has always been willing to co-operate with any liberal political party and we feel there is nothing wrong with us working together with other opposition political parties for the betterment of the Zambian people,” he said. Dr. Mumba said MMD had been involved in some productive negotiations with other opposition political parties.
He observed that negotiations that would benefit Zambians were important especially in a time when the country going through challenges.
“We think that negotiations and talks that would benefit the Zambian people are what are important, MMD is in the middle of reorganising itself, obviously you know that we have been involved in some talks with other political parties,” he said.
Dr. Mumba noted that Alliances were likelihood and that MMD supports such programmes.
He urged opposition leaders interested in forming a pact to come out in the open and be practicle.“So we cannot condemn those that are calling for a united opposition, but it’s a viable option. Opposition leaders that are interested in creating that pact should be willing to talk about it, as MMD we review any proposal and consider how it is going to benefit the Zambian people. We support programmes that will benefit the people,” he said.
Dr. Mumba said a united opposition was an opportunity for a change of government in 2016.
“It’s one opportunity that every political party should consider as we go towards 2016 and also see if it will benefit the Zambian people, that is why we are in politics,” he said.
