Police in Chinsali district of Muchinga Province have arrested five armed robbers who staged a mid-night robbery at Paul Mushindo University construction site on Tuesday.
Muchinga Province Police Commissioner, Auxensio Daka confirmed the arrest yesterday.
Mr Daka said the police also recovered an AK 47 assault rifle and a shotgun from the robbers.
He said the five robbers were arrested barely 24 hours after staging a robbery following a manhunt mounted by police officers from Chinsali police station.
Mr Daka said the robbers wanted to steal from the Chinese construction team engaged to construct Paul Mushindo University whom they suspected to have huge sums of money.
The bandits had also snatched an AK 47 assault rifle serial number 2417 from officers who were guarding the site.
The two police officers who were attacked have been identified as Constable Chilufya and Constable Mwandu who were guarding the university premises.
The two officers were injured in the midnight attack. Constable Mwandu sustained two deep cuts in the head and a suspected fractured left hand while Constable Chilufya sustained bruises on both hands.
The police Chief said the recovered shotgun that was used in the robbery and the stolen AK 47 assault rifle were found in the house of a police reserve officer during an investigation by police.
Mr Daka said a Toyota Noah registration number ACL 7749, grey in colour, was used in staging the robbery and it has since been impounded.
He said this was the third time a robbery had been staged at the site.
Mr Daka said the five suspected robbers were currently in police custody and would appear in court soon. – ZANIS
