Constitution Amendment Bill tabled in Parliament

GOVERNMENT yesterday started the process of amending non-contentious clauses in the 1996 Republican Constitution by presenting the Constitutional Amendment Bill No 17 of 2015.

Justice Minister Ngosa Simbyakula presented the Constitutional Amendment Bill to Parliament.

The Bill provides for the election of the Vice President of the Republic as a running mate to a presidential candidate in a presidential election and also proposes the re-naming of the Zambia Police Force as the Zambia Police Service and the Prisons Service as the Zambia Correctional Service.

Meanwhile, deputy chairman of the committee of the whole House Chifumu Banda referred the Bill to the Committee on Legal Affairs, Governance, Human Rights, Gender matters and Child affairs.

Dr Banda said the committee would be required to submit its report on the Bill to the House by November 17, 2015.

“Honourable members who wish to make submission on the Bill are free to do so in the programme of the committee,” Dr Banda said.
