THE Rainbow Party in Sinazongwe has been rejected and its district chairman George Bbabbi has resigned from the party to join the United Party for National Development (UPND).
Mr Bbabbi said people of Sinazongwe have rejected the Rainbow Party and he has since resigned declaring that the opposition political party was unpopular and unwanted in the area.
He said the people of Sinazongwe summoned him and demanded that he terminated his membership with the Rainbow party because the opposition party and its leadership were unpopular.
Mr Bbabbi said he had decided to resign from the Rainbow Party to join the UPND because his political career depended on the people who did not want to associate with the Wynter Kabimba led political party.
He told the Daily Nation from Sinazongwe that the Rainbow Party was a wrong political organisation that had been rejected by the people who believe that it had no chance of forming government in the nearest future.
Mr Bbabbi said although the Rainbow Party was good, it had no support in Sinazongwe and it was therefore not correct for him to remain in the party after it had been rejected.
Mr Bbabbi who was the first district chairman for the Rainbow Party thanked Mr Kabimba, Mr Robert Chikwelete, its mobilization chairman and second general secretary Cosmas Msumali for having given him chance to lead the party in the area.
He explained that he was more popular with the UPND in Sinazongwe than with the Rainbow Party and could not therefore ignore the demands of the people who were the voters.
Mr Bbabbi said the people in the area wanted him to be a member of the UPND, the party he belonged to before defecting to the Rainbow Party.
He said he was the voice of the people of Sinazongwe and would be happy to represent them under the UPND which was more popular than any other political party in the country.
“I was called by my people in my village and 28 headmen attended the meeting at which I was ordered to leave the Rainbow Party and join my original party the UPND. The Rainbow Party has been rejected here and the people warned me that I was going to lose their support if I was going to continue being a member of the Rainbow Party which is unpopular and unwanted. I represent the voice of the people and I had no choice but to heed to their directive,” Mr Bbabbi said.
He stated that he did not want to continue lying to the Rainbow leadership that the party was popular because only the truth was going to make the leadership realise that they did not have a chance of forming government next year.
Mr Bbabbi said his conscience was haunting him because it was not true that the Rainbow Party was having any impact on the country’s political scene.
Efforts to get a comment from Rainbow Party provincial chairman a Mr Siachoona and party mobilization national chairman Robert Chikwelete failed as their mobile phones were switched off.
