UPND President Hakainde Hichilema has been challenged to prove his statement that the Patriotic Front (PF) was associated with the shooting incidence at the Post Newspaper.
PF official Fr. Frank Bwalya has charged that it was surprising and shocking that Mr Hichilema had linked the shooting to the PF, when the dynamics and veracity of the events were still being investigated by appropriate authorities.
Fr Bwalya said it was unfortunate that Mr Hichilema had elected to be used in the malicious campaign that Post Newspaper owner Fred M’membe had launched against President Edgar Lungu.
“It is common knowledge that M’membe was pushing the agenda that that the Head of State had issued death threats against him.” Fr Bwalya said.
Fr. Bwalya also ridiculed the Post newspaper explanation of the incident which he said defied logic and the law of Kinetics saying:“How could a bullet fired at the office pierce through the root into the ceiling of the building before landing inside the offices. Where was the shooter? On top of the building?” he asked.
Fr Bwalya has challenged the police to thoroughly investigate the matter so that the truth could be known to the public.
Fr Bwalya, who is a PF member, has challenged Mr Hichilema to provide evidence to the police that it was the ruling party that carried out a shooting at the Post newspaper.
Fr Bwalya described the accusations by Mr Hichilema as reckless and irresponsible meant to gain cheap political mileage.
He told the Daily Nation that Mr Hichilema as a leader seeking the highest office in the land should learn to be truthful in what he said and sincere with his actions.
Fr Bwalya said Mr Hichilema had no proof to the effect that it was the ruling party that had carried out the shooting at the Post newspaper and that the UPND leader was using wrong political strategies to seek the sympathy of the newspaper that had clearly showed him that he was not their preferred candidate.
He said there was no justification for Mr Hichilema to accuse the PF of being responsible for the alleged shooting at the Post and demanded that the UPND leader should be given the opportunity to help the police with investigations.
“Mr Hichilema appeared on QFM radio and alleged that the PF was responsible for the shooting that occurred at the Post Newspaper. The allegations by Mr Hichilema should be condemned in the strongest terms possible. That was a reckless and irresponsible statement by a man aspiring to occupy the highest office in the land. Unless Mr Hichilema is telling the nation that the police and other investigative wings had already concluded the investigations and have briefed him about their findings, he should be reminded that he would make a dangerous leader in the manner he is conducting his politics. If Mr Hichilema has evidence, we would be glad if he reported the matter to the police,” Fr Bwalya said.
Fr Bwalya advised Mr Hichilema to slow down and wait for the police to conclude their investigations and make their findings public before making unsubstantiated claims.
And Fr Bwalya has said the manner the shooting at the Post Newspaper was reported to have happened and how the bullet landed in the newsroom defied common sense and Kinetic logic.
Fr Bwalya said the PF had been informed that whoever shot at the Post Newspaper was on one of the roofs and that there was no way he could have known the exact location of his target inside a building.
“I want to urge Zambians to summon their collective intelligence and refuse to buy into cheap politicking aimed at undermining the leadership of President Lungu who is a legitimately elected Head of State,” Fr Bwalya said.
