PREPARATIONS to install a new Chief Chiengele of the Mbunda speaking people in Western Province are under way but this development has come as a shock to the Mbunda Royal Establishment (MRE).
MRE spokesperson Kennedy Mubanga said the Mbundas were shocked because the degazetting of Josiah Mubukwanu Litia Nyumbu as Chief Chiengele was still active in the courts of law.
He said he had received reports that the Mbunda Cheke Chambunda Cultural and Writers Association led by Mr Ndandula Libingi was in Western Province to organise the event, in readiness of the installation of the new chief Chiengele.
He claimed that the association which was led by Mr Libingi was only blessed by the BRE so that they could install their chief Chiengele who would be under their control.
Mr Mubanga accused the Government of not being fair because even the office of the Chiefs and traditional affairs had issued a degazetting notice against Chief Chiengele, when the matter was still in the court.
“We have a President who is a lawyer and he is able to interpret the law, but the Government is quiet, until they see people fighting,” he said.
Mr Mubanga alleged that some of the Mbundas were siding with other tribes to destabilize the Mbunda Royal Establishment
But the Barotse Royal Establishment spokesperson Induna Katema said he was not aware of the installation of the new Chief Chiengele but that the Kuta could be involved if only the Mbundas brought him before the Kuta.
Induna Katema said the BRE was only mandated to set the date for installation after all the procedures had been done by the Mbundas.
“The installation of the new Chief Chiengele is on hold and as a establishment we are awaiting for the Mbundas to bring their own person whom they will choose, and the Kuta is only going to give them the appropriate date for the ceremony,” he said. Chief Chiengele sued the BRE in the Lusaka High Court after the BRE dethroned him about last year for alleged insubordination and the matter is before Justice Mwila Chitabo.
