THE Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has rescheduled the Barclays Cup semi-finals to unknown date because Zambia will host Mozambique in the final round CHAN Rwanda 2016 qualifier on October 17.
According to the Barclays Cup draws conducted on Thursday, the semi-finals were set for October 17.
Head of Club licensing at Football House, Erick Mwanza told the Daily Nation that FAZ was fully aware of the clashing dates and will therefore liaise with the organisers Barclays Bank on the suitable date.
“We are alive to those dates. FAZ and the organisers will announce the dates soon. This is the reason why we did not announce the venue for the semi-finals. The Chan competition is for locally based players hence I understand that it would be unfair for some teams to play the Barclays Cup without their key players. We will release a comprehensive statement soon,” he said.
He said FAZ respects both tournaments and cannot allow anything to compromise the game of football. “To us both tournaments are important and give budding local players opportunity to expose their talent. The CHAN qualifier is vital as we aim for a slot at the finals in Rwanda. A formidable team is needed to execute this important task,” he said.
Zambia booked her final stage spot after a 6-5 post-match penalty win over Namibia following a 3-3 aggregate scoreline played in July at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka. Mozambique sailed to the final stage with a 9-1 aggregate result after beating Seychelles 4-0 away.
Zambia will host Mozambique in the first leg on October 17 and will visit the Mambas in Maputo on October 24.
The Chipolopolo have failed to qualify for the last two editions of the CHAN since finishing third under Herve Renard at the inaugural tournament held in Cote d’Ivoire in 2009.
