THE Patriotic Front in North-Western Province has welcomed the endorsement of President Edgar Lungu as the ruling party’s sole presidential candidate in the 2016 general election.
PF provincial chairlady Martha Mpila told the Daily Nation in an interview that the move was welcome because President Lungu still had a mandate to run the affairs of the party for the next five years as stipulated in the party constitution.
On Saturday, the PF Central Committee unanimously endorsed President Lungu as its sole candidate in next year’s general elections.
Mrs Mpila said the party constitution allowed for a PF president to run the affairs of the party for five years, adding that those eyeing the party presidency should aim at the 2021 convention.
‘’ As PF women in the province, we are happy with president Lungu’s endorsement; we shall rally behind him and give him all the support he needs. We should give him chance to manage our party,” Mrs Mpila said. She said President Lungu has united both the party and the nation by embracing everyone.
And Mrs Mpila has appealed to women in the province to take advantage of Government programmes of empowering them through women clubs.
She said the PF government under the able leadership of President Edgar Lungu wants to improve the welfare of women through women empowerment.
“Women in the province should take advantage of these programmes. Government is there to provide such programmes for them to benefit,” she said. Meanwhile, PF provincial youth Chairperson Gerald Chibuye has called on the youths not to engage themselves in violent activities during the forthcoming Solwezi West by-election.
Mr Chibuye said his party will not allow youths from all political parties participating in the by-election to engage in such vices.
“We want peaceful and issue-based campaigns, no character assassination, no violence,” he said.
Solwezi West fell vacant after the death of the member of Parliament Humphrey Mwanza.
