MOVEMENT for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has adopted Fordson Musele Malichinji as the candidate for the Solwezi West parliamentary by-election.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has set 24 September as polling day.
MMD spokesperson Raphel Nakachinda said the national executive committee has made its final decision following the recommendation of the lower organs at the constituency, district as well as the province.
Mr Nakachinda said Mr Malichinji was a local person and a community leader.
“Yes, I can confirm that we have concluded the adoption process for the Solwezi West seat and we have finally adopted Mr Fordson Malichinji,” Mr Nakachinda said.
He said the party was ready for the by election and it was confident that Mr Malichinji would deliver the seat.
And when contacted for a comment, Mr Malichinji who is a former deputy mayor for Solwezi Municipal Council, said he was confident of scooping the seat and he was happy that his party had settled for him.
“Am happy that my party has settled for me, it’s not easy. And I am confident that I will scoop the seat,” he said.
Mr Nakachinda appealed to party members to rally behind Mr Malichinji and to give him the support he needed.
Meanwhile, the United Party for National Development said it had concluded the adoption at the lower organs. UPND provincial chairperson Grandson Katambi said in an interview that the shortlisted names had been submitted to the national management committee for the final decision.
“We are done with the process at the constituency, district and the province, so what is remaining is the National Management Committee to make the final decision,” he said.
Mr Katambi said out of the five members who applied to contest Solwezi West, only four managed to attend the interview.
