SINAZONGWE Member of Parliament Richwell Siamunene is not our member as he was expelled three years ago, opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema has said.
But MMD national youth secretary Bowman Lusambo says President Edgar Lungu had exhibited true statesmanship by taking a bold step to appoint Mr Siamunene as Defence minister.
Mr Hichilema has accused the new Defence minister of being the cause of the abuse of the judiciary and that of Parliament.
“He is sitting in Parliament, but he should not be sitting in that Parliament because he was expelled three years ago,” Mr Hichilema said.
He described the appointment of Mr Siamunene as Minister of Defence as corruption on the part of President Edgar Lungu.
Mr Hichilema further said the appointment of the Defence minister by President Lungu was abuse of the judicial processes as well as the parliamentary, adding that he (Siamunene) was expelled from the UPND three years ago.
“Clearly you can also see the quality of Lungu himself to go and appoint poor quality people of that level. It shows that Lungu himself is of no quality and no leadership,” Mr Hichilema claimed.
In the process, Mr Hichilema said the country and the people of Zambia were suffering.
Mr Hichilema said President Lungu and his Government had no priority, adding that even the appointment of Mr Siamunene was of no quality.
But Mr Lusambo said the decision by President Lungu to bring back the national motto of “One Zambia, One Nation” was bearing fruit.
He said the appointment of Mr Siamunene also reaffirmed President Lungu’s commitment to appointing people from all regions of Zambia.
“We have received the appointment of Mr Siamunene as efence minister with a great sense of delight and appreciation,” he said.
Mr Lusambo said Mr Siamunene was a youthful politician, adding that his appointment would inspire many young politicians across partisan lines.
“We know that some disgruntled politicians have for some time been scheming to label President Lungu as tribalist in his appointments. To the contrary, we believe that the same magnanimity exhibited when he appointed Madam Inonge Wina as Vice President is the same that will vindicate President Lungu for many years to come over Mr Siamunene’s appointment,” Mr Lusambo said.
