Lawyers representing Ms Sylvia Masebo, have insisted that she has remained a member of the Patriotic Front and were incensed by our story yesterday which they implied suggested otherwise.
‘‘We advise that there are ongoing proceedings before the court of law with regard to Sylvia Masebo’s parliamentary seat of which you are well aware of.”
The said publication, according to the lawyers, Levy Mwanawasa and Company, did not contain factual statements and was intended to mislead people and, “the purveying as facts, statements which are not true is destructive to Ms Masebo’s career and contemptuous of ongoing proceedings which are before the courts of law’’.
“We advise that you issue a public apology to retract the libelous statement contained therein, on the front page of your paper to equate the said publication in your tomorrow’s publication, failure to which we shall proceed to institute legal proceedings in the court of law.” In our story yesterday we stated, “Scores of United party for National Development yesterday turned the Lusaka Magistrate Court into a political arena in support of Chongwe Patriotic Front (PF) member of parliament Sylvia Masebo who appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to two counts of abuse of authority of office.
.We stand by our story, which was a contemporaneous account of an event that took place outside the courts of law, where Ms. Masebo is facing corruption charges.
