The debt which Zambia has contracted through borrowing so far in a short period of time is a source of great concern. Zambia contracted a debt of US$4.8 billion as at February 2015. The Government assured the nation through the Minister of Finance Alexander Chikwanda that the debt in question is sustainable. It is not a matter of the debt being sustainable or not. The concern is that our country might fall into the status of the highly indebted poor country (HIPC) like what we went through under the late President Levy Mwanawasa’s rule. This should not happen again.
