GOVERNMENT has prioritised the provision of quality education as enshrined in the Patriotic Front manifesto to reduce poverty, says North-Western Province Minister Dawson Kafwaya.
Speaking during the handing over of a 1 x 3 classroom block at Kalweo community School built by Freca Mining Limited, Mr Kafwaya said construction of schools was important for education as a tool for reducing poverty in the country.
Mr Kafwaya, who is also UPND Solwezi Central member of Parliament, said the partnership shown by Freca Mining Limited in addressing the need for education infrastructure in his constituency and the country at large was proof of the success of the public private partnerships (PPP).
‘’Being a member of Parliament and knowing the challenges this community had in terms of the provision of quality education, I sought for help from our cooperating partner Freca Mining Limited who later put up this facility which we are witnessing today. Am privy to the fact that for a long time pupils have suffered from the effects of weather because they had no proper infrastructure,” he said.
Mr Kafwaya said becouse Government alone could not address all the challenges in the education sector, the state was encouraging PPP in the construction of schools and other amenities in communities. He said the new and improved facility would increase access to education and play a major role in shaping the future of the children in the area.
Mr Kafwaya said such initiatives aimed at supplementing Government’s efforts in improving access to quality education should be encouraged by all.
‘’This Government is encouraging and also supportive of stakeholders who have shown their efforts in creating a positive impact in communities in which they operate and the opening of this school has marked the cooperation of Freca Mining Limited and the local community who made it possible for the company to construct the classroom block,” he said.
Mr Kafwaya thanked Freca Mining Limited for the good gesture, noting that the facility would go a long way in addressing some of the challenges the community had been facing.
And Mr Kafwaya has appealed to the community to protect the infrastructure from possible vandalism as some people did not want to see development hence resorting to destroying what has been put up at a huge cost.
Kalweo community school was constructed at a total cost of K520,000.
Earlier, Freca Mining Limited proprietor Fred Kasongo said the company was compelled to construct the school after seeing the long distances the pupils in the area had been walking to get to the nearby school.
