HAKAINDE Hichilema has never faced a revolt in the United Party for National Development (UPND) and assertions that the opposition leader has imposed Patriotic Front (PF) Kasama member of Parliament Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba on the party as vice-president are untrue and unfounded, Edward Mumbi has said.
And UPND media director Ruth Dante said Mr mwamba was overwhelmingly voted for as UPND vice-president for administration by both the national executive committee and the national management committee and could not therefore be rejected by the general membership of the party.
Mr Mumbi who is special assistant (special duties) to UPND president Hakainde Hichilema said the appointment of Mr Mwamba, popularly known as GBM as UPND vice-president had sent shivers in the PF because the Kasama MP had contributed immensely to the victory of the ruling party in 2011.
He told the Sunday Nation yesterday that Mr Hichilema was a very consultative leader who had never made a unilateral decision on all matters that involved the governing and administration of the UPND.
He said the PF in its current position was worried because some of its senior members would soon start leaving the party to join the UPND which he said was assembling the kind of leadership that was going to take over the governance of the country after the 2016 general elections.
Mr Mumbi said there was no truth in claims that the national management committee of the UPND and the general membership had rejected Mr Mwamba.
He said the UPND had remained the most united political party with its leadership in total congruency in all the decisions that were being taken including the appointment of Mr Mwamba as vice-president for administration.
“The headline in today’s (yesterday)Daily Nation that UPND members reject GBM is not true and I doubt if it was issued by any of our members.
The UPND president, Mr Hichilema has never faced any revolt in the party and it is the PF that is deeply worried with the realisation that most of their senior members will soon be leaving their party to join the UPND which is poised to take over the governance of the country next.
The UPND in its current form is very united and Mr Hichilema as the leader of the party has never made unilateral decision on the administration and governance of the party,” Mr Mumbi said.
He said the appointment of Mr Mwamba had proved that the UPND was not a tribal political party and that the party was of national character devoid of any vices of tribe, ethnicity or regionalism. Mr Mumbi said there was overwhelming consensus by the national management committee of the UPND on the appointment of Mr Mwamba as vice-president and that it was not correct to apportion the decision to Mr Hichilema as an individual.
He said the PF should respect Mr Mwamba’s decision to accept the position of vice-president in the UPND stating that it was without doubt that the Kasama law maker was a founder sponsor of the ruling party and that his decision to work with the UPND had unsettled the PF. “What we should be looking at as Zambians and the PF included is to find leadership that is going to develop the country and this is the leadership that the UPND is assembling.
Let us unite and identify our challenges and work towards resolving them. Let the PF respect the decision of Mr Mwamba because he contributed a lot to move the PF to form government,” Mr Mumbi said.
