TRANSPARENCY International Zambia (TIZ) has welcomed Minister of Youth and Sport Vincent Mwale’s action to dissolve the National Youth Development Centre board on allegation of abuse of office and corruption.
TIZ information officer Charles Chulu said his organisation was happy that Government had taken steps in addressing the abuse of the NYDC by senior officials.
“We welcome Government’s decision in dissolving the National Youth Development Council board whose action saves the on-going wastage of public funds. In welcoming this development, TIZ would like to underscore the fact that as an organization, we shall continue pressing for action to prevent wastage of public funds and corruption in the public sector,” said Mr. Chulu.
He said TIZ agreed in totality with the Government to fully probe all the allegations including those raised by former board chairperson Dr. Saviour Chishimba.
Mr. Chulu also warned Government controlling officers to act against abuse of public funds failure to which they would call for their dismissals.
“We want to also send a clear warning and strong advice to all permanent secretaries that TIZ shall not hesitate in calling for their dismissals when we gather enough evidence that they are failing to protect public funds. We have taken note that the permanent secretary at the Ministry of Youth and Sports Agness Musunga complied with our demand as she wrote to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) within our 72 hours ultimatum.
“For now, the campaign to have her dismissed has been halted and lies in abeyance. We appeal to ACC to conclude the investigations as TIZ has the full knowledge that they initiated this investigation in September 2014 upon receiving a dossier,” he said.
